Hi Dr, a friend of mine is starting to lose his hair, especially at the top an in a sort of “U” shape on the forehead. I think it i caused by stress as he works really hard. What procedure would you recommend for him to go for to stop this thinning and help the regrowth of his hair? Thanks, Janine

    • Dear Janine. It could be Androgenetic Alopecia, but I will have to make a diagnosis first. There are quite a few reasons for hair loss including stress. However, in the case of stress induced hair loss the hair loss does not occur in a pattern.

    Hi Dr Louw,

I have a mole on my left cheek since birth, I would like to get it removed for cosmetic reasons. Very self conscious in photos. What is the procedure? I do not want a big scar on my face.

    Hello Dr Louw
My son (20) has got warts on his elbow area. We have tried many treatments over the years including freezing. Nothing seems to remove them. Can you please help?
    Regards,
    Julie

    • Dear Julie, There are no consistently reliable treatment for warts. The “trick” with treating warts lies in the consistent use of the chosen therapeutic modality. In other words, the treatment must be used often enough so that the speed of destruction of the wart from the treatment, is faster than the growth of the wart. Combination treatments are generally better.

Hi, I developed a red circle mark on my right cheek. Is it possible to remove the pigmentation with laser treatment as well as redness from another scar? I have tried lots of creams but to no avail. If it is possible, how much will the treatment cost? Please help. Dave

Good Day. Can you furnish me with codes regarding vein removal in order for me to enquire by my medical aid as to whether they will cover cost thereof. Much appreciated. Regards

    Dr Dr Louw,

In the last year and a half I have put on +- 10kg and this resulted in some stretch marks. For about 2 months I have not gained any more weight but my stretch marks appear to be spreading. I now have them on my calves which is bizarre. Could I be missing something in my diet? And is there any way to stop this and help the others disappear? Bio oil is not helping

    Hi Dr Louw,

I have a faint grey area on my upper lip from threading (the hair) and then being exposed to the sun. People say it is not that noticeable but I am very self-concious of it. Would I need to take medication or have laser therapy done to remove it?

    Thank you

  • Craig

    Dear Dr Louw
I’ve been struggling with in-grown hairs in the corners of my nose from cutting my nasal hairs. So I’m wondering would laser therapy help remove them?

    Dear Doc

I had shingles on the face some few years ago and this affect my confidence. Is there scar removal treatment that I can do?

  • Zubeida

    Hi Dr. Louw,
A recent visit to a dermatologist was very disappointing when after less than 10minutes of “examining” my face, he simply said he could not help me at all! I have scarring, and what he called “ice-pick” scars from adult acne. The “holes” really bother me as it seems to be more prominent as I age (I’m 39). I am Indian, and have a dark pigmentation and he also told me that surgical procedures wouldnt be recommended for dark skin colours. Please Help! Is it worth coming in for a consultation?
    Z

    • Dear Zubeida. It is true that lasers a more risky in dark skinned people. There are a few treatments options for acne scarring, depending on the type of scarring. If it is a big concern for you, then yes, come and show me.

    Dear Dr.Louw,

I am a 21 year old female and have alot of blemishes on my face from the acne I had in my teenage years.I’d like to know if laser treatmant will be able to remove all of these blemishes. I’ve learnt that just using certain creams does not help at all,

    Kind Regards,

  • layla

    Dear Dr. Louw,

I am 20year old female and experiencing much hair loss (and thinning hair). My mother and sister do not have this problem, however it is common trait within my fathers family : all the men and some of the women. I assume that is the cause of my problem, so i would like to know if their are any treatments available (exclude surgery) that could possibly help me overcome the hair loss if it is genetic??

    • Dear Layla. You most likely have Androgenetic Alopecia, but there are other causes of hair loss. The first step is to make a diagnosis. If you do have Androgenetic Alopecia then medications like Diane 35 or Minerva is a good place to start. Both these OCP’s contain cyproterone acetate, which blocks the effect of testosterone on the hair follicle.

    Dear Dr Louw

I am an indian lady who is interested in getting laser hair removal for my underarms, I have heard that my skin may be too dark to remove the hair. Is this true?

  • Mamohube

    Hi,

I am 28 year female of dark skin with aczema, for the past 8 months i’ve been ussing Different gel at Night and Yasmin pills for my facial skin pigmentation/scars BUT up to so far this prescription does not respond to my skin and i don’t see any chances in my skin.

I would like to do facial laser treatment to remove my pigmantation permanently. I would like to know the total amount for the laser treatment?

    • Dear Mamohube. Before we can treat the pigmentation it is essential to first treat the cause of the pigmentation. Very often, once the cause of the pigmentation is treated, the pigmentation problem tends to settle on its own.

  • Abraham Mouton

    Dear Dr. Louw,

I am a 34 year old male and suffers from in-grown hair on my face.

Is there anything that can be done to prevent this?

    • Dear Abraham. The simplest to solve the problem is with laser hair removal. If you do not want to thin your beard then the treatment can involve a variety of things, including different shaving technique, topical creams and certain oral medications.
